Help Collect Food Right Where People Shop!
Running a food drive is easier than you think, and one of the simplest ways to do it is by setting up a small donation table outside your neighborhood grocery store. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:
Step 1: Choose a Time
Pick an hour or two when grocery traffic is high. Weeknight evenings or weekend afternoons usually work well. You can do this on your own or bring a friend to help.
Step 2: Set Up a Table
You don’t need much. Just bring:
A small table
A Food for Brooklyn sign or poster (download here)
A few mini flyers to hand out to shoppers (download here)
If you live in Greenpoint, contact us at foodforbrooklyn@gmail.com before your drive. We’re happy to lend you everything you need, including a table, signage, and flyers.
Note about Met Food (197 Nassau Ave, Greenpoint):
Met has generously allowed food drives outside their store in the past. However, we ask that you set up across the street at the entrance to McGolrick Park, not directly in front of the store. Please help us to respect their space!
Step 3: Invite Donations
As shoppers approach the store, greet them warmly and offer a flyer. Let them know you’re collecting non-perishable food for local families in need, and they are welcome to pick up a few extra items while they shop.
Always keep it friendly and low pressure. Please do not solicit aggressively.
Step 4: Drop Off Donations
When you’re done, email us at foodforbrooklyn@gmail.com to arrange a time to drop off what you collected.
